The East Anglian ‘scene’ is a thriving & diverse animal, lurking almost unseen on the musical plains, but with a hardcore dedication to live music that has sadly diminished in other regions.
Having been overlooked by major label tours (or with dates added as an apparent afterthought) for multiple generations has created an isolated musical landscape, allowing an almost infinite number of genres to evolve & hold sway.
This isolation has forced East Anglia in general (and Norwich in particular) to build its own strong & self-contained world of sound where independent venues are the true heartbeat of the city - dark, intimate grassroots spaces featuring a steady stream of D.I.Y talent and their loudly affectionate fans.
Walk down Gentleman’s Walk or Pottergate on any sunny weekend afternoon and you will hear top-tier buskers filling the air - and a simple glance at the BOOMBOXtv What’s On listings would reassure you that there is a wealth of live music out there…
But, with all that being said, yes the scene is vibrant but it also faces real-world commercial and social pressures. Promoters often note that with so many gigs happening at once across the region getting the word out to the casual public can be difficult - this is an area where BBTV has always consistently tried to help.
Rising costs have also put pressure on venues to take fewer financial risks - meaning a return to the BAD old days of Cover bands and Tribute acts dominating all the best dates, at the best venues.
But with the memory of the Brickmakers 2019 - 2022 / BOOMBOX era still reasonably fresh in all of our minds - an era which has been consistently praised as “…Norwich’s most independent & eclectic live music era of this millennium…“ the collaborative & alternative spirit of this fine city still endures - which also means that the bands, the gig spaces, and the fans will always find a way to unite to keep Norwich loud, weird, and completely unforgettable.
